BP has a great opportunity to hire a Communications Advisor for our Shipping function. The Communication & External Affairs function aims to build BP's reputation by proactively and systematically putting forward a clear and concise set of messages supported by powerful proof points to defined target audiences, informed by and underpinned with research insights.

BP Shipping's communications team aims to build high levels of employee engagement, understanding and buy-in. To do so, the communications team works with the Shipping leadership team to create and drive a strategic communications plan that supports Shipping's business priorities. In this role, you will work closely with the head of communications, BP Shipping, and the rest of the Shipping communications team to create and deliver effective communications and engagement plans and to build employee awareness of - and commitment to - the Shipping strategy and business goals. This is particularly vital as the business gets ready to launch its modernisation programme and deliver its HSSE transformation.

Key accountabilities that you will have in the role are:
  • Leading communications support for key projects and programmes (e.g. HSSE transformation and modernisation programme) with the goal of supporting the delivery of BP Shipping's strategic priorities
  • Guiding, educating and coaching line managers regarding communications effectiveness. Providing coaching and advice to the BP Shipping business regarding best use of communication channels as well as brand and C&EA policy and procedures
  • Ensuring that all activities undertaken within area of responsibility are compliant with the BP communications policy and procedures
  • Creating and co-ordinating the production and approval of internal communication tools and activities with the goal of ensuring effective delivery of the communications plan
  • Drafting and editing content for BP Shipping's channels ensuring it is of the highest editorial and writing standards and accurately reflects BP Shipping's strategy, operations and key themes. Keeping abreast of what's happening across Shipping to generate interesting news story ideas.
  • Managing internal stakeholders and external agencies with the goal of ensuring that agreed standards for time, costs and quality are met
  • Taking part in crisis response as part of BP's Incident Command Structure, providing communications support to Shipping's Incident Management Team as and when required
  • Driving rigorous evaluation of communication activity ensuring that approaches and decisions are informed by research and measurement, creating an evidenced-based approach to communications.

In this role, the communications advisor will be expected to be able to work at pace without sacrificing quality and attention to detail, build strong relationships quickly with key stakeholders, support the business leaders to engage and energise their teams and work with a wide range of teams across the business to ensure disciplined, systematic and joined-up communications.

You will have a degree or equivalent professional experience in corporate communications and have a business-facing internal and external communications track record including evidence of designing and implementing communication plans using a number of tools and channels. You will also be an engaging writer with experience delivering messages to a variety of audiences and cultures. It is important that you have experience of business partnering, providing guidance and advice to colleagues at all levels regarding effective communication approaches and delivery. A good understanding of commercial and business drivers and exposure to aligning communications with business strategy and a good understanding of new and emerging communication technologies is also key.
